HEAT PUMPS
Heat pumps are energy-efficient heating and cooling solutions that utilize electricity to move heat from one location to the next, making them an efficient alternative to systems which rely on burning fossil fuels for their operation.
Heat pumps work by extracting heat from the air or ground outside a building and transferring it inside, heating it as required. Conversely, during summer months this process reverses and the heat pump removes heat from inside to provide cooling benefits.
There are various kinds of heat pumps, such as air-source heat pumps, geothermal (ground source or geothermal heat pump) heat pumps and water-source heat pumps. Air source pumps use outside air as the heat source while geothermal (or ground-source heat) pumps use the constant temperature of the ground as their heat source; water source heat pumps utilize water from nearby lakes or rivers as their heat source.
Heat pumps are more energy-efficient than traditional heating and cooling systems because they move heat instead of creating it through combustion, but may incur higher upfront costs for installation, while their efficiency could be compromised in extreme temperatures. Still, with proper care and operation practices in place, heat pumps can provide efficient heating and cooling over many years.
